The Embellished Vase ~ A DIY Project

Vase jazzed up with this fleur de lis embellishment!

Getting Started:

Hey E-Trenders, it's Angela! I purchased the red vase from a local thrift store. I found the fleur de lis embellishment at Hobby Lobby. They sell several different sizes and designs but I figured even if the size of the embellishment was a little larger than the vase, it would still look pretty on the vase.

I washed the vase and let it dry so that it would be clean when I attached the embellishment.

The fleur de lis embellishment is made out of a hard plastic acrylic material so I purchased Glass Bond to use as the adhesive for my project.

I placed newspaper on my table just in case the adhesive decided to drip!

I coated the back of the fleur de lis embellishment with the glass bond adhesive but I did not coat the very edges and the top of it as I wanted them to hang off of the vase.

With the glass vase on the table, I flipped the fleur de lis embellishment over with the adhesive side down and using my hand, I firmly applied pressure to adhere it to the vase.

When I released my hand, I used a wet paper towel to wipe off any access glue that may have squeezed it's way onto the vase.

ET Tip ~ no fear if you cannot get all of the glue off when it is wet, any access glue actually rubs off rather easily when it is dry, using your hand, a wet paper towel, or even a toothpick.

I placed a heavy book on top of my project and let it sit over night to dry. The Glass Bond directions state that small items will set in 10-15 minutes while larger items will bond in 24 hours.

Next step...enjoy your DIY embellished vase and use it in a tablescape or at your next event! Wouldn't this be pretty on your Valentine's Day tablescape?!

The Decorated Wagon

Long ago, wagons were created for transporting goods, materials and sometimes people...today they are used as an amusement for children and as beautiful decorations for gardens and events -the decorated wagon is one vintage trend that we just cannot get enough of!

and the rest is history!

Happy 4th of July!

Hello E-Trenders!  We hope you have a festive July 4th celebration! 

Here is a little red, white and blue DIY in honor of the holiday.

 

Check out this easy, breezy summer wreath featured in a recent issue of Better Homes & Gardens (below).

All you need is a 16 inch styrofoam wreath which can be purchased at your local craft store and a variety of scrap fabric. Cut the fabric in 18 inch long strips that are approximately one inch thick (cut about 50 - 60 strips)

Simply tie the fabric around the wreath alternating colors and patterns.

When you are finished adding all the fabric strips to the wreath, trim the ends with scissors.

ET Tip: add dimension to the wreath by using pinking shears and regular scissors when trimming the ends of the fabric strips.

Loop a small wire in the back of the wreath and hang on your front door.

Are You Ready For Some Zen? By E-Trender Sue Keels

Hello E-Trenders!  First of all Angela and I want to thank you for all of your EventTrender support!  We are getting ready to celebrate our two year ET BLOG anniversary!  Thank you for all of your feedback, ideas and inspiration we have met so many new blogger friends and E-Trender followers through our creative blogging journey.  We are working on all kinds of inventive lifestyle and entertaining ideas to share!  We are launching an online Etsy shop (coming this summer), partnering with some exciting new sponsors and working on our ET Essential Rentals brand! 

So many of you ask – how do you find time for creativity?  I thought it would be fun to share my personal space for inspiration where I am surrounded by all things I love, thought provoking quotes, favorite books and whimsical artwork.  Welcome to my ZEN DEN (actually my sister Karyn officially named the space).

 

Definition of ZEN:  To Gain Enlightenment

The ZEN DEN was a former third bedroom that was very seldom used and ready for a much needed remodel!  Prior to the ZEN DEN I would write, edit photos, blog and create in my family room or kitchen where there always seemed to be some type of distraction.  I was craving my own space, a little piece of heaven where I can escape from the world of hustle and enjoy peace, relaxation and some ZEN!

My inspiration for this space was artwork by Kelly Rae Roberts - artist, author, possibiltarian AND also one of my favorites!  I love her playful art which I incorporated as a focal point in the ZEN DEN.  She has an amazing story about self discovery and finding her passion a little later in life!  Check out Kelly's website here to learn more about her talented gift!

As most of you know I am all about a little vintage!  What's old is new...like this vintage suitcase I rescued!  It's perfect for extra storage and adds vintage authenticity to a modern space.

This Headington Paisley Blue and Brown Loveseat is from Pier 1 Imports.  I fell in love with it!

 
I added ruffle pillows and found this adorable little bird table at Pier 1 Imports. 

As mentioned earlier in this post, I filled my ZEN DEN with things I love including this life changing book that my sister Karyn introduced to me two years ago "Simple Abundance" by Sarah Ban Breathnach.  I always enjoy a spot of tea when reading and added this teacup as functional (and quaint) decor.

Simple Abundance is "A Daybook of Comfort and Joy" which truly gave me a new perspective on life.  I would highly recommend this book if you are yearning for an enlighted life outlook.

This old wooden ladder has been repurposed to display scarfs and blankets.  I also reclaimed an old rake with a fresh coat of white paint and it's now perfect for hanging hats! 

E-Trenders are you feeling the ZEN yet?

I found this basket at Target and filled it with yards of fabric for crafting.

I added a few old school measuring tools including a yardstick!

 

This vintage typewritter adds relevance to my ZEN DEN and it actually works! 

Here is a closer look at this old beauty!

I found this desk at an estate sale for $20.00 and splurged on the bookcase purchased at my favorite furniture store @home furniture.  Everything in the store is handcrafted with TLC and made in the USA.  All of the wood used for the furniture is from Michigan and other parts of the country (buy local).  Check out @home furniture here.

I filled the bookcase with my collection of cookbooks.

Including some heirloom cookbooks passed down from my Grandmother Rizzo.

I stacked two antique drawers to use as storage.  It's also a popular design trend. 

Old mason jars are perfect to store pens and markers.

The little cottage blue owl makes me happy!

A Vintage Garden Inspired Wedding

First Comes Love...Then Comes Planning!

Bride to be Ann Marie Hicks contacted E-Trender Angela Butorac to coordinate and start planning the details about a year in a half before her July 2011 Royal Park Hotel wedding to Samer Jaber.

The theme would have a romantic vintage garden feel..and even better, the bride wanted to incorporate a lot of DIY elements into the decor!

We enlisted the creative floral talent of Erica Piquant with Eco-Posh Events to design Ann Marie's bridal bouquet and the personal flowers for the bridal party and relatives. The roses in Ann Marie's bouquet (pictured above) represent the color story for her and Samer's wedding...peach, ivory, soft pinks, and pale yellows.

The bride's sisters Angela and Amanda beautifully hand crafted centerpieces and accent arrangements around the ballroom with fresh flowers supplied by Erica with Eco-Posh Events. The wedding was filled with beautiful vintage tea cups and vases. Ann Marie and her mom Pat collected thrifty treasures in the months before the wedding that perfectly fit the theme.

Guests were greeted by a beautifully decorated credenza filled with garden florals, and a frame filled with vintage postcards!

Remember Ann Marie & Samer's guest sign in book...a coffee table book filled with pages of garden florals? We featured this on a previous EventTrender post called Love Notes to the Bride and Groom and think it is an idea worth sharing again...

A Thanksgiving Harvest Tablescape

An Open Home an Open Heart, Here Grows a Bountiful Harvest

Here are a few DIY ideas E-Trender Angela came up with for creating a beautiful Thanksgiving tablescape and some unique holiday decor elements that even the kids can help you with!

Create a centerpiece using something that is unexpected, like this wrought iron fireplace piece by PartyLite. Typically this is used as a candle holder in front of a fireplace, but here Angela re-purposes it to be a harvest filled conversation piece in the center of the Thanksgiving table! -This look is perfect if you are serving your Thanksgiving meal buffet style in another area of your home then you have plenty of room on your table to create something special for your family and guests!

Collect small gourds and pumpkins from your local farmer's markets and grocery stores to use for your centerpiece. Cluster them around the bottom of your centerpiece. Incorporate votive candles (or led candles) if you are worried about little ones touching them!

 

DIY Thanksgiving Place Cards ~

Use a marker or Sharpie paint pin for wood to write the name of your guest at the top of the clothes pin.

These little foam Thanksgiving Turkeys can be purchased at craft stores like Michael's. They have a sticker back so you can stick them to your clothes pin.

Fold a cloth napkin (or cloth place mat) into a square or rectangle shape (whatever you prefer) and use raffia to tie a bow around the napkin.

Attach your Thanksgiving Turkey clothes pin to the center of your bow and place on top of your place setting!

Michaels Craft Store sells a roll of burlap garland by Panacea that was perfect for creating burlap sashes on the chairs.

DIY Leaf Banner ~

Create a leaf banner by punching holes in the top of foam leaves, Michaels Craft Stores sells them in a large package. String a ribbon through the top of them and space them out to create your banner. Angela created a shadowed effect by placing a sparkly leaf on top of a plain leaf.

DIY Wine Glass Luminary ~

Angela layered the bottom of a wine glass with crushed pecans and added a battery operated LED candle.

Create this template to make your shade using a piece of scrapbook paper or vellum. Angela chose a scrapbook paper that fit in with the color them but vellum really lets the light shine through!

Now how about a special treat?

Pumpkin Pecan Bundt Cake with Spiced Caramel Sauce ~

Ingredients:

3/4 cup coarsely chopped pecans

1 package yellow cake mix

1 can (30 ounces) Libby's Easy Pumpkin Pie Mix, divided

3 large eggs

1/4 cup vegetable oil

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

2/3 cup (5 fluid ounce can) Evaporated Milk

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Grease 9 1/2 inch Bundt pan

Sprinkle nuts in bottom of prepared pan

Beat cake mix, 2 cups of pumpkin pie mix, eggs and oil in large mixer bowl for 2 minutes

Spoon mixture into prepared pan

Bake for 35-40 minutes or until wooden toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean

Cool in pan on wire rack for about 15 minutes, then flip cake out of pan to let cool on wire rack completely

Transfer the cake to a serving platter

Caramel Sauce:

Combine remaining pumpkin pie mix, brown sugar and evaporated milk in a medium sauce pan

Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat

Boil for one minute, remove from heat

Serve warm sauce with slices of cake

Apple Dip & Tips!!

Hello E-Trenders as we celebrate apple season we wanted to share more app-licious inspiration!

E-Trender Cathy Churilla recently shared this decadent caramel apple dip recipe.

We added an ET presentation twist!  Check it out...

Start with Marzetti's caramel dip and add softened cream cheese...

Mix both ingredients together.

 Using 1/2 pint size mason jars - fill half way with the caramel and cream cheese mixture.

  

Wipe the inside edge of the jar and add a caramel layer on top of the mixture.

Sprinkle Heath Bits on top of the caramel layer.

Cover the mason jar with a lid to secure freshness.

Here is the presentation twist E-Trenders...

Create individual favors by adding a caramel dip filled mason jar to the bottle of a medium size cellophane bag.

 

 Now place an apple on top of the 1/2 pint mason jar.

Tie the cellophane bag with a colorful ribbon and natural raffia.

This is a perfect party takeaway or favor for Thanksgiving! 

 

E-Trenders - here is the official recipe...

Caramel Apple Dip
8 oz. cream cheese (softened)
Marzetti's Caramel Dip (15 oz.)
Heath Bits (found in the baking aisle)
Mix a generous scoop of caramel and the cream cheese together and spread in a pie plate.

ET Tip:  Make individual caramel dip favors by filling in 1/2 pint size mason jars!

Top with remaining caramel. Followed by a solid layer of Heath bits.  Serve with apple wedges.

We recently asked Annette to share some tips with our E-Trenders.  Annette handcrafts dipped apples and has a passion for chocolate making!  Check out this quad-dipped apple layered in creamy caramel and triple dipped in white, milk and dark chocolate!  Is your mouth watering yet E-Trenders?

 

Annette starts with dipping the apple in caramel and recommends using tart Granny Smith apples which compliments the sweetness of the chocolate and caramel.  After the caramel cools, dip the apple in tempered white chocolate, let cool and continue this process with milk and dark chocolate.  Annette also recommends crushing candy bars and adding the candy to the bottom base of the apple.  Each apple is about two pounds of pure heaven!  Annette suggests using a knife to cut and serve apple slices for dessert which is a sweet alternative to pie or cake slices.

Spooktacular Halloween Weddings

Happy Halloween E-Trenders!

This past weekend was Halloween weekend and some Halloween loving bride's and groom's took their favorite holiday to the next level and incorporated the theme into their wedding!

Over the weekend, Angela and ET Treasure Seeker Rose styled and setup decorations for Jaime and Thom's Halloween theme wedding at the historic Lafayette Grande Banquet Facility in Pontiac, Michigan...here's a look...

The Spooktacular Altar!

This was one of the cutest ideas...the bride and her mom used wrought iron quilt racks to suspend ribbons with a tag that contained the guest's name and table number and a beautiful spider handmade by the bride using jewelry beads.

The decorative fabric flowers placed around the tables were handmade by another family member!

A closer look at the bejeweled spiders!

Halloween pens and decorative cards were provided so guests could sign in on the Spell book!

Crafters at a local Michaels store created this lit pumpkin display featuring owls, a black crow and fall theme foliage.

Candles were placed inside carved pumpkins that were used as the centerpiece for each table. The bride supplied custom made table numbers that Angela stuck into each pumpkin.

The 2nd Floor Grande Ballroom at The Lafayette Grande! Home to many spectacular weddings, the very site where E-Trender Angela and her husband Anthony celebrated their wedding with friends and family!

Guest's received an origami game wedding program containing all the details of the wedding ceremony!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

      Sweet little theme cake toppers!

Jaime's mom supplied the treats and containers for guest's to trick or treat at the Halloween candy theme buffet! E-Trender's Angela and Rose placed treat bags in an empty bucket for guest's to fill with their favorite treats!

Family owned and catered by the Kosch family, The Lafayette Grande Banquet Facility has been a popular place for weddings and events! Built in 1923 as a Masonic Temple Lodge, the Kosch family bought this little piece of history in 1997, it is registered with the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Michigan State Historical Preservation Offices. The owners have truly taken this historic gem to new heights by blending modernized facilities with old-world charm serving thousands of guests with its grand splendor year round!

Conjure Up a Spellbinding Harry Potter Tablescape

This year there was a bittersweet feeling among dedicated Harry Potter fans as the final film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" hit theaters. Over the summer, E-Trender Angela had the pleasure of working with a true Harry Potter fan, intern Robin Weaver. Robin's excitement for the novels by author J. K. Rowling and enthusiasm for the movies inspired the idea of creating a Spellbinding Harry Potter Party ~ perfect for Halloween and birthday parties for adults or teens!

Centerpiece Details~ vintage cake stand found by E-Trender Sue Keels at a thrift store, crystal balls donated to the scape by Todd Lloyd owner of Chair Covers & Linens, Todd found these great crystal accents at Target! Owls, courtesy of E-Trender Angela's Aunt Cindy's owl collection!  Vintage candle sticks from Robin's mom's collection. And the authentic Chocolate Frog box Robin purchased while visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios!

Angela and Robin visited Chair Covers & Linens and found the perfect linen to help set the scene for the tablescape...

The linen called Burgundy Rubi Rose closely matched the scarlet and gold colors of the Gryffindor House which is the house that Harry, Hermione and Ron belonged to at the Hogwart's School. Rent this linen for your event here.

Robin tied clear jewelry wire to each candle stick and suspended them from the chandelier to create the effect of candles levitating over the dining tables of the Great Hall!

Chocolate frogs are a popular treat at Hogwarts! They are packaged with collectible cards portraying witches and wizards. Many of the students at Hogwarts collect and trade the cards. There are many versions being sold online. Angela & Robin used a chocolate frog mold and Mercken's Dark chocolate to make their own! They make a great favor for your guests too!

Warm up with a cup of Kreacher's French Onion Soup!

Pumpkin Pasties were a treat that Harry Potter tried for the first time while traveling on the Hogwart's Express at the start of his first school year. They are just as delicious as they sound!

Butterbeer is served cold or hot in foaming tankards.  It was a popular wizarding beverage served at The Three Broomsticks Inn frequented by Potter, his friends, peers and professors in the films.

E-Trender Angela's husband Anthony donated his own tie and scarf adorning Gryffindor colors to the scape!

In the films, Cockroach Clusters contain real cockroaches to give them their crunch! In reality, they can be delicious and a fun addition to your Harry Potter themed treats!

Stacked books that fit in with the theme make a great pedestal for elevating your plates and platters!

ET Tip ~ E-Trender Angela created the food place cards using a Harry Potter font maker she found on this website.

Angela copied the graphic to a Word document and formatted the picture to the desired size for the place card. Then she cut out the word and mounted it with glue dots to a piece of red card stock paper, that was folded in half to make the table tent.

And who wouldn't LOVE Hagrid's Rock Cakes?! Harry, Ron and Hermione ate a few of these whenever they visited Hagrid. These little cakes are supposed to look and somewhat taste something like a rock, even having a hard surface. Although, Hagrid's Rock Cakes were nothing to write home about...you will find that this version can be a scumptious treat for your guests!

Are you having fun? If you are planning a Harry Potter theme party a must is asking your guests to dress up as characters from the films or pupils of the Hogwart's School!

Happy Fall E-Trenders!

In honor of this beautiful colorful season, we are hosting a contest for the most beautifully decorated PorchScape!

Here is how you get involved…

Is your front door or porch decorated beautifully for the fall season?

Why not show it off and put all your hard work to use for a chance to win our fall Porchscape contest and inspire our Eventtrenders!

Throughout the rest of the month of October through November 30, 2011 we will be accepting entries for the contest!

It's easy...submit a high resolution photo to us at [email protected] with a description of the elements you used to decorate and what inspired you to use them!

At the end of November, the top three entries will be selected by EventTrender Founders Sue and Angela and then posted on our Facebook page and EventTrender blog to be judged by our readers and loyal ET followers!

The winner will receive a $50 Lowe's gift card ~ just in time for the holidays!
